Book Description

This study is an introduction to the theology of three leading professors in the Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerken in the Netherlands during the first half of the 20th century. It argues that they neither imposed a subjective-objective grid on Scripture nor developed an airtight philosophical system of balance, but aimed to listen to Scripture so as to avoid the unscriptural imbalances of the day in doctrine and practice. Their ultimate aim was to see living Churches, founded on the firm ground of doctrine, walking in the light of God's word, and nourished by the pure rain of the Holy spirit. To that end they stressed both the primacy of the objective element and the necessity of the subjective element of spiritual life. This study gives not only an understanding of the theological roots of the Free Reformed Churches but also a challenge to the Reformed community to further this aim.
