Book Description

Often considered a modern phenomenon, binge drinking is in fact an age-old problem. John Flavel, a Puritan minister in the naval port of Dartmouth, England, pulls no punches as he confronts the sin of drunkenness head on. Flavel’s treatment is a highly relevant exposé of the soul-destroying evils of this ‘detestable sin.’

Author

The oldest son of an English minister, John Flavel attended University College, Oxford before entering the ministry in 1650. In 1662, he was among nearly 1,800 pastors in England removed from their pulpits because they did not comply with the Act of Uniformity. Enduring waves of persecution as a non-conformist, Flavel nevertheless preached whenever possible, continuing to spread the Gospel in unexpected places. John Flavel books include The Works of John Flavel, a six-volume set of the best of Puritan divinity. They also include None But Jesus, a selection of some of the best of Flavel’s work; The Mystery of Providence, based upon Psalm 57:2 (“God that performeth all things for me”) and revealing how God’s providence is part of every experience in our lives; and Facing Grief, which offers guidance for Christian mourners, sharing appropriate levels of grief along with what is considered immoderate.

Endorsement

"To read the work of a Puritan doctor of the soul is to enter a rich world of spiritual theology to feed the mind, heart-searching analysis to probe the conscience, Christ-centred grace to transform the heart, and wise counsel to direct the life. This series of Pocket Puritans provides all this in miniature, but also in abundance."
