They have been placed together in this opening volume of his Collected Writings as the best introduction to his thought on wide range of Christian truth. Murray’s belief was that, while the expression of truth ‘may be expanded indefinitely and furnish nourishment for the highest intellects to eternity’, it is also capable of presentation in popular and generally-understood terms. Accordingly, he speaks in these pages not so much to students as to the church at large in this critical century of her history. Such chapters as ‘Some Necessary Emphases in Preaching’, The Power of the Holy Spirit’, and ’The Church of Mission’, show how thoroughly he understood the great inadequacies of much contemporary Christianity.

This material (none of which has been previously published in book form) gives the quintessence of the convictions which were characteristic of his mature thought. Their appeal in written form is increased by the pervasive influence of his belief that theology should be ‘shot through with warmth of ardent devotion’. He addresses himself to the needs of both mind and heart, believing that when Scripture is opened there should be both light and heat. His overriding concern is that the Word of God should challenge every area where thinking and living can be shown to be deficient and that the traditions of men should give way to ‘the claims of truth.’

Author

John Murray, born shortly before the cusp of the 20th century in Scotland, was considered a leading Reformed theologian. He served in France in World War I and then pursued studies at the University of Glasgow and then Princeton Theological Seminary. He briefly taught at the latter school before teaching at Philadelphia’s Westminster Theological Seminary. He taught there through his retirement, also being ordained in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. John Murray books include the Collected Writings of John Murray, a four-volume set that contains the best of his wisdom, along with a detailed account of his life; Redemption Accomplished and Applied, in which he distills information about the concepts of regeneration, justification, adoption, sanctification and glorification for Christians, and stresses the importance of union with Christ; and Free Offer of the Gospel, which shares how people who embrace Jesus will enjoy the marvelous gift of salvation.

Endorsements

"In this collection of lectures, addresses, and sermons, Murray shows himself to be that rarest of birds: a first-rate academic who could communicate clearly. These 49 chapters on everything from Christology to the Sabbath to evangelism to Calvin to war to Christian education can be read profitably as history, as theology, or as devotional edification."
— Kevin DeYoung

Additional Information

Cover: Hardcover
Number of Pages: 392
Publisher: Banner of Truth Trust
Publication Date: November 1, 1976

https://reformedbookservices.com/products/collected-writings-of-john-murray-volume-1-the-claims-of-truth
