Book Description:

The relation between Jesus Christ and culture should be recognized as a topic of crucial importance in every historical context. It concerns the foundational questions of Christian thought and action. In this book Dr. Klaas Schilder deals with this challenging subject in a bold and incisive manner, thus making his readers aware of the all-embracing significance of Christ for cultural endeavors. The biblical position taken by the author leads him to explore its implications with remarkable clarity and directness. In this way he makes a valuable contribution to the development of a Christian view of culture.

Author:

Klass Schilder (1890-1952) was a distinguished theologian who played a prominent role in the history of the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands. In 1933 he was appointed professor of systematic theology and ethics at the Theological Seminary in Kampen, a position he held until his death. Schilder was the prolific author of numerous articles and books. His trilogy Christus in Zijn Lijden—translated into English as Christ in His Suffering, Christ on Trial, and Christ Crucified—received international acclaim.

Endorsements:

"I have been hoping for decades for this kind of English-language edition of Klaas Schilder's Christ and Culture.... It is no secret that I am an enthusiastic advocate for the 'neo-Calvinist' perspective of Kuyper and Bavinck. But I am also greatly indebted to Schilder, and precisely because of his profound critical interactions with the Kuyperian perspective."
--Dr. Richard J. Mouw

"Those currently interested in a Christian approach to culture and Kingdom need to hear also the voice of Dr. Klaas Schilder and the welcome clarifying comments of Dr. Jochem Douma. It is great to have this available in English."
--Dr. Gerhard H. Visscher
